Navigating change: From Leeds to Lancashire - A PR freelancer's journey

January is typically a month of quiet reflection and re-establishing routines post-Christmas. However, this year, my January started with a significant event - a house move. As we all know, moving house is often considered one of the most stressful experiences, and this time was no exception.

This relocation not only transformed my personal life but has also had a substantial impact on my professional journey as a PR freelancer. Having resided in Leeds for the past decade, where I’d cultivated a well-established network, the move to Poulton-le-Fylde in Lancashire presented a unique set of challenges. The shift demanded that I essentially start from scratch in terms of networking and establishing professional connections.

As a PR professional, adapting to change is second nature. Yet, the move has underscored the importance of applying these skills not only to client projects but also to my own life and business. Here are a selection of tips on dealing with change and stress that I’ve found helpful during this time of upheaval:

1. Embrace the unknown

Moving to a new location involves a degree of uncertainty. Similarly, in the world of PR, not every campaign or strategy unfolds predictably. Embracing the unknown can open doors to unexpected opportunities. Whether it’s a new town or a new project, being open to new possibilities can lead to opportunities and results that you never expected.

2. Network with purpose

In a new community, building connections is crucial. Finding new businesses and organisations that align with my business objectives and vision has been really important to establish meaningful connections and build my network.

3. Stay adaptable

Change often comes with unexpected twists. Being adaptable has always been a crucial ability in the world of PR, but of course it’s even more important when experiencing a significant change like a house move. Flexibility and adaptability have helped me to adjust strategies, learn from challenges, and evolve both personally and professionally.

4. Find strength in fresh starts

Although I thrive off routine, I also enjoy change every now and then. I find that it can give you a fresh perspective and be the perfect opportunity to reflect on your goals (personally and professionally) and potentially redefine them. Find strength in fresh starts and leverage the opportunity to set new goals and explore uncharted territories. As a PR professional, use this momentum to innovate in your strategies and embrace the potential for growth.

The learning curve has been steep, but it's also been enjoyable. I’ve found myself catapulted into an environment where networking has become not just a professional necessity, but a lifeline. The shift has forced me to step up my game, scheduling more conversations and networking meetings than ever before. It’s been a little daunting but it’s provided a fresh perspective and a unique start to 2024.

In conclusion, my recent house move has been a transformative experience, not just personally but professionally. I’ve met the challenges of starting anew with enthusiasm and done everything I can to enjoy the process and stay adaptable. As we venture further into 2024, I am excited about the prospects that lie ahead, both in my new Lancashire home and in the ever-evolving landscape of PR.
