Back on 03rd November, I finished my notice period and officially became a Freelance PR Consultant. But what has that meant?
Being a jack of all trades - PR specialist, business owner, business development manager (amongst other things).
Learning about invoicing and finance.
Understanding the ins and outs of working for yourself, by yourself without the support of a team.
Overcoming self doubt and finding small things that boost self belief. Things like meditation, positive thinking and doing things that take you out of your comfort zone.
And what does this really look like? It’s all well and good talking about what I’ve had to learn, but have I actually done anything with these lessons? You bet I have! Over the past four weeks I’ve:
Travelled to Oxford and Nottingham for client meetings.
Written seven new business proposals, four of which have been signed off and two which are still warm.
Connected with so many new, supportive people.
Worked on really interesting projects including a Viking grave, pods that emulate pollution levels, and an announcement that could directly impact 60,000 people currently on the NHS ophthalmology waiting list.
Attended an event with lots of other agency owners and freelancers.
But what does this mean from a results perspective? What have I actually achieved for my clients? A couple of highlights have been:
An opportunity secured with BBC South Today.
Coverage across key regional publications, including the Oxford Mail and Oxford Times.
It’s been a real learning curve but I’m loving it so far! I can already tell there are going to be ups and downs, but I’m very excited to see what the future as a freelancer holds for me.
